Between Good Friday and Resurrection Sunday

candleThis is the day in which we live our lives  Our entire lives.  On Friday the One who had promised so much and who had demonstrated so much of the in-breaking reality that God is for uswas executed.  Unbelievably, the dream had ended.

Or so it seemed.

For those of us who live some 2000 years later, we know what is coming.  The best efforts of Pilate and the political and religious authorities to seal the tomb and keep the rabbi from messing about with the world as it is will fail.

But, 2000 years ago, no-one knew.  For them, what happened on Friday was ultimate and final.  Jesus was dead.  As was their hope.

This day, Holy Saturday, is the in-between day.  It is the day in which our entire lives are lived.

We have seen so much hope and promise (in Jesus, in Scripture, in the Church, in the Kingdom) but, let’s be honest, the tenacious perseverance of the world’s darkness and suffering makes it easy to think that all the dark stuff is ultimate, and final.  Just like the crucifixion must have seemed, the day after.

But here’s the deal:  resurrection is coming.  Jesus’ death and resurrection means that death is no longer fatal.  No longer fatal.  And if deathcan’t take us out anymore, then what can?  No more fear.  That’s the promise.

So as we bear witness to this Good News in a world where weeds and wheat grow alongside each other (Matthew 13:24-29;36-43), let’s remember that the story did not end on Friday.  And neither will ours.
